National Senior Health and Fitness Day

, May 30th, Mizell Senior Center is celebrating National Senior Health and Fitness Day. Please come and join Mizell as we celebrate this event. We take great pride that the Mizell Senior Center offers Health and Fitness programs daily and is the place to be for active adults in the Coachella Valley. We will be offering several free classes that day including Fit After Fifty, Zumba Gold, Chair Yoga, Tai Chi, and a special health lecture as well as free blood pressure checks. This is your chance to sample some of our fun and exciting health and exercise classes and programs. Check the lobby schedule for location of all classes. This is your chance to sample some of our most popular fitness and exercise classes and celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day at Mizell. Mizell Senior Center has been serving the greater Palm Springs area for nearly 40 years, and is the community focal point on healthy and active aging. This is a place where Active Seniors come together for service and activity which enhances dignity, supports independence, and encourages involvement in and with the community. Programs support individuals in all phases of the aging process and promote healthy aging, wellness, and community participation. The mission of the Mizell Senior Center is to enhance the lives and welfare of adults who live in or visit our community. Programs and services at Mizell Senior Center are designed to meet the needs of low income seniors and to provide opportunities to combat loneliness, isolation, and maintain active productive lives. Loneliness, isolation, and depression know no economic boundaries. We have over 50,000 visits each year from individuals taking part in our activities and programs.
Weekly Newsletter
Mizell Senior Center publishes a Weekly e-Newsletter that is distributed to our members and supporters. The Newsletter contains a wealth of information about upcoming programs and activities at Mizell along with our weekly nutrition program menu. All of our Business Partners are listed in the Newsletter along with links to their websites so you can easily find out information on products and services that are important to you. Specific programs include Meals On Wheels, exercise and fall prevention programs, congregate meals on and off site, counseling, health checks, and a variety of social and recreational programs to increase socialization. Our annual flu shot program provides low cost flu vaccinations to nearly 400 high risk seniors in partnership with Desert Regional Medical Center.
Daily Lunches
Hot lunches are served daily. We have a new lunch program. If you are over 60 years old and would like to participate, ask to complete the Enrollment Form. We are requesting a $3.00 donation to help maintain the high quality of our Meals. If you are under age 60 or do not wish to participate in the program, the meal cost is $4.00. Bridge Lessons and Supervised Play
Learn How to Play this Popular Game
Beginning Bridge
Have you always wanted to learn to play bridge? Have you not played bridge in several years and would like to learn the style of bidding used in the 21st Century? Then the Beginning Bridge Class starting on Wednesday, May 8 from 9:00AM to 11:00AM is for you!! Instructor Gary Delestine, has a 6 week class to teach you all the basics. Students will learn the fundamentals of the exciting game of bridge. There will be a simplified and an in-depth approach to each lesson and each class will include playing time on practice play boards that will illustrate the topics being covered. Each student will need to purchase the book, Bridge Basic 1 by Audrey Grant from the instructor at the first class for $10.00. Cost for this program is $60.00 for members and $90.00 for non-members. Supervised Bridge Play
Ready to take your bridge game up a notch? Supervised Bridge Play begins on Monday, May 13 from 9:00AM to 11:00AM. This is a four session class meeting on Mondays through June 3. These sessions are intended for those who have the basic knowledge of bridge but would like to increase their confidence, understanding and improve their level of expertise. Instructor Gary Delestine will provide “supervised play” for 4 sessions. He will be available to advise and guide you as you play your game. Cost for these classes is $10.00 per session for members and $15.00 for non-members.
AARP Mature Driving Classes Return in May
Be Sure to Sign-Up Early for This Popular Class
Some drivers age 50+ have never looked back since they got their first driver’s license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. That’s why you won’t want to miss this two session course on May 13 and 14 from 12:30PM to 4:30PM. By taking a driver safety course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. In addition, this course will cover:
- How to remain a safe, competent driver
- Help you save money on your car insurance
- Learn about new features on cars
- Learn about New Laws and how they affect you.

Healthy Living Program for Seniors
7 Session Course Presented by County of Riverside
The Healthier Living Program for Seniors is a Chronic Disease Self -Management Program workshop that is facilitated by two trained leaders. The Healthy Living Program will be held on Tuesdays beginning on May 21 at 10:00AM and continue on Tuesdays through July 2. The program features seven weekly classes that offer information on healthy living, nutritious cooking demonstrations and exercise. Participants are encouraged to create an action plan, with goals for the week to follow a healthier lifestyle. This program is presented and sponsored by the County of Riverside Department of Public health – Public Health Nursing. The program is free to Mizell members and $5.00 for non-members.
